Common uses

spinal anaesthesia in adults

Common side effects

low blood pressure
slow or shallow breathing from high block
feeling sick and vomiting

Cautions

given only by trained staff with close monitoring
not with severe bleeding, shock or serious heart rhythm problems
accidental injection into a vein can cause seizures and cardiac arrest
not recommended for people under 18 years

Interactions

other local anaesthetics — toxic effects add up
nitrates, nitrites and certain other drugs — methaemoglobinaemia risk

Pregnancy: commonly used during labour and delivery under specialist care
