Bisacodyl

A stimulant laxative taken to treat constipation.

Clinical information

Common uses

constipation
emptying the bowel before surgery or examinations

Common side effects

feeling sick
diarrhoea
stomach pain or cramps

Cautions

do not use every day for more than 5 days
long-term use can cause diarrhoea and salt imbalance
not suitable with bowel blockage or severe stomach pain
take 1 hour apart from dairy products or antacids

Interactions

diuretics (medicines that make you pee more)
steroids like prednisolone
digoxin (heart medicine)
indigestion remedies (antacids) — leave a 1-hour gap
dairy products like milk — leave a 1-hour gap
other laxatives — only combine on medical advice
