Bethanechol Chloride

A tablet that stimulates the bladder, used to treat urinary retention.

Clinical information

Common uses

urinary retention after surgery or childbirth (non-obstructive)
underactive (neurogenic) bladder with retention

Common side effects

stomach cramps or discomfort
feeling sick and belching
diarrhoea
flushing, feeling warm and sweating
headache

Cautions

not with asthma, peptic ulcer, slow heart rate or low blood pressure
not with overactive thyroid, epilepsy or parkinsonism
not when the bowel or bladder wall is weak or blocked
