Bethanechol Chloride

A tablet that stimulates the bladder, used to treat urinary retention.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • urinary retention after surgery or childbirth (non-obstructive)
  • underactive (neurogenic) bladder with retention

Common side effects

  • stomach cramps or discomfort
  • feeling sick and belching
  • diarrhoea
  • flushing, feeling warm and sweating
  • headache

Cautions

  • not with asthma, peptic ulcer, slow heart rate or low blood pressure
  • not with overactive thyroid, epilepsy or parkinsonism
  • not when the bowel or bladder wall is weak or blocked
