Belimumab

An injectable biologic (BLyS inhibitor) used to treat lupus.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • active systemic lupus erythematosus, alongside standard therapy
  • active lupus nephritis, alongside standard therapy

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • fever
  • cold-like symptoms and bronchitis
  • injection site reactions

Cautions

  • serious, sometimes fatal infections can occur
  • watch for new or worsening depression or suicidal thoughts
  • serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) reported
  • no live vaccines during treatment

Interactions

  • live vaccines (do not give during treatment)

Pregnancy: not enough data — may affect the baby's immune system
