Bedaquiline Fumerate

An antimycobacterial tablet used with other drugs for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • pulmonary TB resistant to rifampicin and isoniazid
  • part of combination therapy, adults and children 2 years and over

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • joint pain
  • headache
  • coughing up blood
  • chest pain

Cautions

  • can prolong the heart's QT interval — ECGs are monitored
  • more deaths were seen in one trial arm — specialist supervision
  • can injure the liver — liver tests monitored
  • not for latent, drug-sensitive or extra-pulmonary TB

Interactions

  • rifampicin, rifapentine, rifabutin (avoid — make it less effective)
  • efavirenz (avoid)
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (raise levels — monitor closely)
  • other QT-prolonging drugs (additive heart rhythm risk)

Pregnancy: insufficient human data; no harm seen in animal studies
