Baclofen

A muscle relaxant used to ease muscle spasms, cramps and tightness.

Clinical information

Common uses

muscle spasms in cerebral palsy
muscle symptoms in multiple sclerosis
muscle spasms in motor neurone disease

Common side effects

headaches
dry mouth
feeling tired or weak
feeling dizzy or faint
feeling or being sick

Cautions

do not stop suddenly — withdrawal symptoms; dose reduced gradually
do not drive if dizzy, tired or eyesight is affected
best not to drink alcohol
may not suit epilepsy, liver, kidney or mental health conditions

Interactions

other muscle relaxants such as tizanidine
lithium or amitriptyline (mental health medicines)
blood pressure medicines such as diltiazem
Parkinson's medicines (co-beneldopa, co-careldopa)
sedating antihistamines and sedatives (promethazine, temazepam)
opioid painkillers (morphine, buprenorphine)

Pregnancy: may be taken if benefits outweigh risks — baby monitored after birth
