Azithromycin

A macrolide antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chest infections such as pneumonia
  • ear, nose, throat and sinus infections
  • skin infections and Lyme disease
  • some sexually transmitted infections

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • being sick
  • headaches
  • changes to your sense of taste

Cautions

  • finish the full course, even if you feel better
  • can affect your heartbeat — care with heart problems
  • may not suit liver or kidney problems or myasthenia gravis
  • thrush can develop after a course

Interactions

  • antacids (take doses 1–2 hours apart)
  • warfarin and other blood-clot medicines
  • ergotamine or dihydroergotamine (migraine)
  • ciclosporin or tacrolimus, colchicine, digoxin
  • statins such as simvastatin or atorvastatin
  • heart rhythm-affecting medicines (amiodarone, sotalol, citalopram, domperidone)

Pregnancy: OK if an infection needs treatment — other antibiotics may be preferred
