Azacitidine

A chemotherapy medicine given by injection for myelodysplastic syndrome and certain leukaemias.

Clinical information

Common uses

myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in adults
chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia
juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia in children

Common side effects

feeling sick and vomiting
low blood counts (anaemia, low platelets, low white cells)
fever
diarrhoea or constipation
redness at the injection site

Cautions

blood counts checked often — can cause severe blood-cell drops
can cause serious or fatal tumour lysis syndrome
extra risk with severe liver disease; kidney monitoring needed
must not be swapped with oral azacitidine tablets

Pregnancy: can harm the baby — avoid; use effective contraception
