Axitinib

A targeted kinase-inhibitor tablet used to treat advanced kidney cancer.

Clinical information

Common uses

advanced kidney cancer after one prior treatment
first-line kidney cancer with avelumab or pembrolizumab

Common side effects

diarrhoea
high blood pressure
tiredness
decreased appetite
sore hands and feet (hand-foot syndrome)

Cautions

can cause severe high blood pressure — keep it controlled
blood clots and bleeding can occur and may be fatal
slows wound healing — pause before and after surgery
liver and thyroid problems — regular blood tests

Interactions

strong CYP3A4 inhibitors — avoid (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir)
strong CYP3A4 inducers — avoid

Pregnancy: can harm an unborn baby — use effective contraception
