Atropine Sulphate

An emergency injection used for dangerously slow heart rate and certain poisonings.

Clinical information

Common uses

dangerously slow heart rate and bradyasystolic cardiac arrest
antidote for organophosphate or muscarinic mushroom poisoning
drying up saliva and airway secretions before procedures

Common side effects

dry mouth
blurred vision
sensitivity to light
fast heart rate
reduced sweating, causing heat intolerance

Cautions

can worsen glaucoma
can worsen difficulty passing urine
can cause a fast heart rate
can thicken mucus in the airways

Interactions

mexiletine (atropine slows its absorption)

Pregnancy: life-saving treatment is not withheld in pregnancy; limited safety data
