Atracurium

An injectable muscle relaxant used during general anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation.

Clinical information

Common uses

muscle relaxation during surgery
helping insertion of a breathing tube
mechanical ventilation

Cautions

hospital use only, with airway and breathing support available
does not affect consciousness or pain — adequate anaesthesia needed
must not be injected into muscle
multi-dose vials contain benzyl alcohol — risky in newborns

Interactions

inhaled anaesthetics (enflurane, isoflurane, halothane)
aminoglycoside and polymyxin antibiotics
lithium
magnesium salts
procainamide and quinidine
succinylcholine (recover from it first)

Pregnancy: only if benefit justifies the risk
