Atorvastatin

A statin used to lower cholesterol and prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high cholesterol
  • preventing heart attack, stroke and angina
  • protecting people with diabetes or kidney disease

Common side effects

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • feeling sick
  • digestive problems such as constipation or diarrhoea
  • muscle aches and swollen joints

Cautions

  • report severe muscle pain, cramps or weakness — rare muscle damage
  • limit alcohol — it raises the risk of liver problems
  • avoid more than 1–2 small glasses of grapefruit juice daily
  • may not suit liver, kidney or thyroid problems

Interactions

  • antifungal medicines (itraconazole, fluconazole)
  • antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin, fusidic acid)
  • HIV and hepatitis C medicines
  • ciclosporin (transplant medicine)
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • St John's wort

Pregnancy: not recommended — stop 3 months before trying to conceive
