Atomoxetine

A non-stimulant capsule (noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor) used to treat ADHD.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • ADHD in adults and children aged 6 and over
  • part of a wider ADHD treatment programme

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • decreased appetite
  • tiredness or sleepiness
  • stomach pain
  • dry mouth

Cautions

  • can increase suicidal thoughts in children — watch closely, especially early on
  • stop if jaundice or liver injury develops
  • raises blood pressure and heart rate — checked regularly
  • not with serious heart problems or narrow-angle glaucoma

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants (never together or within 14 days)
  • strong CYP2D6 inhibitors (raise atomoxetine levels)
  • blood pressure medicines (extra monitoring)
  • salbutamol-type inhalers (heart rate and blood pressure effects)
