Atenolol

A beta blocker medicine for high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and angina.

Clinical information

Common uses

high blood pressure
irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia)
preventing angina chest pain
preventing migraines

Common side effects

feeling sleepy, tired or dizzy
cold fingers or toes
feeling or being sick
diarrhoea
stomach pain

Cautions

do not stop suddenly, especially with heart disease
may not suit people with asthma or lung disease
can hide low blood sugar warning signs in diabetes
take the first dose at bedtime — it can cause dizziness

Interactions

other blood pressure medicines (pressure can drop too far)
amiodarone or flecainide (heart rhythm medicines)
asthma or COPD medicines
insulin and diabetes medicines
nose or sinus congestion and cold remedies
alcohol (increases dizziness)

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy, but labetalol is usually preferred
