Atazanavir

Clinical information

Common uses

HIV-1 infection, combined with other antiretroviral medicines

Common side effects

feeling sick
yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
rash
headache
stomach pain

Cautions

many serious drug interactions — check every new medicine
can slow the heart's electrical conduction
stop if a severe rash develops
liver monitoring needed, especially with hepatitis B or C

Interactions

rifampicin (TB medicine — do not combine)
carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital (epilepsy — do not combine)
St John's wort (do not combine)
simvastatin and lovastatin (statins — do not combine)
antacids (take 2 hours apart)
warfarin and newer blood thinners (bleeding risk)

Pregnancy: no increased risk of major birth defects seen
