Ascorbic Acid

Vitamin C given as an intravenous infusion for short-term treatment of scurvy when it cannot be taken by mouth.

Clinical information

Common uses

treatment of scurvy (up to 1 week)
for patients who cannot take vitamin C by mouth

Common side effects

pain and swelling at the infusion site

Cautions

prolonged high doses can cause kidney (oxalate) damage or kidney stones
people with G6PD deficiency risk red blood cell breakdown
can interfere with blood and urine glucose tests
maximum recommended course is one week

Interactions

some antibiotics (erythromycin, doxycycline, others) may work less well
bleomycin (cancer medicine)
amphetamine — levels may fall as urine becomes acidic
warfarin (blood thinner) — keep standard monitoring
fluphenazine

Pregnancy: in pregnancy, dose should not exceed the recommended dietary allowance
