Artemether+ Lumefantrine

A combination antimalarial tablet used to treat uncomplicated falciparum malaria.

Clinical information

Common uses

acute uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria
effective where chloroquine resistance is reported

Common side effects

headache
loss of appetite
dizziness
weakness
joint and muscle pain

Cautions

can affect heart rhythm (QT) — avoid with existing QT problems
not for severe or complicated malaria
not for preventing malaria
avoid within one month of halofantrine

Interactions

rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John's wort (do not combine)
grapefruit juice (raises drug levels)
HIV antiretrovirals (use cautiously)
quinine or quinidine (heart rhythm risk)
hormonal contraceptives (less effective — use extra method)
flecainide and some antidepressants (heart rhythm risk)

Pregnancy: human studies have not shown harm; untreated malaria is itself risky
