Apixaban

An anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to treat and prevent blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • preventing stroke in atrial fibrillation
  • preventing clots after hip or knee replacement

Common side effects

  • bleeding more easily (nosebleeds, bleeding gums)
  • bruising more easily
  • anaemia, which can make you tired
  • feeling sick
  • rash

Cautions

  • risk of serious bleeding — carry your anticoagulant alert card
  • get urgent help for signs of bleeding or a head injury
  • may be unsuitable with ulcers, recent brain bleed, liver or kidney disease

Interactions

  • other anticoagulants such as warfarin
  • antifungal medicines
  • NSAID painkillers
  • SSRI antidepressants
  • St John's wort
  • HIV medicines such as ritonavir
