Apalutamide

An androgen receptor inhibitor tablet used to treat prostate cancer.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer
  • non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer

Common side effects

  • tiredness
  • joint pain
  • rash
  • decreased appetite
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • heart and stroke events have occurred — heart risk is monitored
  • increases fractures and falls
  • seizures can occur — stopped permanently if one happens
  • rare severe skin reactions — report rash, fever or mouth sores

Interactions

  • can make many other medicines less effective (CYP3A4 and similar substrates)
  • can falsely raise digoxin blood-test results

Pregnancy: can harm an unborn baby — not for use in women
