Anastrozole

A hormone medicine (aromatase inhibitor) that treats and helps prevent breast cancer.

Clinical information

Common uses

hormone-dependent breast cancer after the menopause
preventing breast cancer in high-risk people
breast cancer in men

Common side effects

hot flushes and sweating
difficulty sleeping
feeling very tired
mild aches in muscles and bones
low mood

Cautions

can weaken bones (osteoporosis) — bone density is monitored
can raise cholesterol levels
not suitable if you still have periods
do not drive if it makes you tired or dizzy

Interactions

HRT and other menopause-symptom medicines (stop it working)
herbal remedies for menopause symptoms (stop it working)

Pregnancy: not recommended when pregnant
