Anastrozole

A hormone medicine (aromatase inhibitor) that treats and helps prevent breast cancer.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • hormone-dependent breast cancer after the menopause
  • preventing breast cancer in high-risk people
  • breast cancer in men

Common side effects

  • hot flushes and sweating
  • difficulty sleeping
  • feeling very tired
  • mild aches in muscles and bones
  • low mood

Cautions

  • can weaken bones (osteoporosis) — bone density is monitored
  • can raise cholesterol levels
  • not suitable if you still have periods
  • do not drive if it makes you tired or dizzy

Interactions

  • HRT and other menopause-symptom medicines (stop it working)
  • herbal remedies for menopause symptoms (stop it working)

Pregnancy: not recommended when pregnant
