Amoxicillin

A penicillin antibiotic for bacterial infections like chest infections and dental abscesses.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chest infections including pneumonia
  • dental abscesses
  • ear and chest infections in children
  • stomach ulcers (with other medicines)

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • skin rash

Cautions

  • not if allergic to penicillin
  • around 1 in 10 people have an allergic reaction
  • rash likely with glandular fever
  • can affect some blood and urine test results

Interactions

  • methotrexate
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • probenecid or allopurinol (gout medicines)
  • other antibiotics

Pregnancy: safe to take during pregnancy
