Amlodipine besylate + Valsartan

A combination tablet (amlodipine plus valsartan) used to lower high blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • hypertension not controlled on one medicine
  • initial therapy when multiple drugs are likely needed

Common side effects

  • swollen ankles (peripheral oedema)
  • cold-like symptoms
  • upper respiratory infection
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • stop as soon as pregnancy is detected — fetal injury (boxed warning)
  • low blood pressure — correct dehydration before starting
  • kidney function and potassium monitored in susceptible patients

Interactions

  • aliskiren in diabetes (do not combine)
  • simvastatin (max 20 mg daily)
  • NSAIDs (kidney harm, reduced effect)
  • potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics (high potassium)
  • lithium (toxicity)
  • CYP3A inhibitors and inducers (alter amlodipine levels)

Pregnancy: do not use — can injure or kill the fetus
