Amitriptyline

A low-dose tricyclic medicine for nerve pain, long-lasting pain and migraine prevention.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • nerve pain (neuralgia)
  • long-lasting pain
  • migraine prevention

Common side effects

  • constipation
  • feeling dizzy
  • dry mouth
  • feeling sleepy or tired
  • difficulty peeing

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly — withdrawal-like symptoms
  • can worsen heart problems, epilepsy and glaucoma
  • overdose is dangerous — heartbeat changes, seizures
  • do not drive if sleepy; alcohol adds drowsiness

Interactions

  • opioids like codeine or morphine (drowsiness, breathing problems)
  • other antidepressants (very high blood pressure)
  • St John's wort (avoid)
  • cannabis and recreational drugs (dangerous combinations)

Pregnancy: can be taken — not thought harmful to the baby
