Clinical information
Common uses
- acute and chronic schizophrenia
- positive symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations
- negative symptoms such as emotional and social withdrawal
Common side effects
- shaking, stiffness or restlessness (movement side effects)
- difficulty sleeping, anxiety or agitation
- sleepiness and blurred vision
- feeling sick, vomiting, constipation or dry mouth
- weight gain
Cautions
- can affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation) — ECG may be needed
- severe liver toxicity reported — report nausea, stomach pain or jaundice quickly
- stop and get help for high fever with muscle stiffness (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
- not for children under 15
Interactions
- levodopa and dopamine Parkinson's medicines (must not be combined)
- heart-rhythm medicines (amiodarone, sotalol, quinidine)
- citalopram, escitalopram, domperidone, hydroxyzine (heart-rhythm risk)
- methadone and intravenous erythromycin
- sedating medicines, including opioids and sleeping tablets
- other antipsychotics (avoid combining)
