Clinical information

Common uses

acute asthma exacerbations (adjunct)
reversible airflow obstruction in emphysema and chronic bronchitis

Common side effects

feeling sick and vomiting
headache
trouble sleeping
restlessness and irritability
tremor

Cautions

toxic levels cause seizures and dangerous heart rhythms — levels monitored
extreme caution with peptic ulcer, seizures or arrhythmias
many illnesses slow clearance — dose adjustments needed
persistent vomiting may signal toxicity — infusion stopped

Interactions

cimetidine, erythromycin, tacrine (raise theophylline levels)
carbamazepine, rifampicin (lower levels)
