Aminophylline

Clinical information

Common uses

  • acute asthma exacerbations (adjunct)
  • reversible airflow obstruction in emphysema and chronic bronchitis

Common side effects

  • feeling sick and vomiting
  • headache
  • trouble sleeping
  • restlessness and irritability
  • tremor

Cautions

  • toxic levels cause seizures and dangerous heart rhythms — levels monitored
  • extreme caution with peptic ulcer, seizures or arrhythmias
  • many illnesses slow clearance — dose adjustments needed
  • persistent vomiting may signal toxicity — infusion stopped

Interactions

  • cimetidine, erythromycin, tacrine (raise theophylline levels)
  • carbamazepine, rifampicin (lower levels)
