Amino Acids

An intravenous amino acid solution used as the protein part of drip feeding when eating or tube feeding is not possible.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • protein source in parenteral (intravenous) nutrition
  • treating negative nitrogen balance

Cautions

  • not for people with inborn errors of amino acid metabolism
  • allergic reactions can occur — the infusion is stopped if they do
  • high blood sugar, infections and liver problems can occur with drip feeding
  • given only by healthcare professionals into a vein

Pregnancy: considered when a pregnant woman cannot be fed by mouth or tube
