Amikacin

An aminoglycoside antibiotic given by injection for serious bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

short-term treatment of serious infections
Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas, E. coli and Klebsiella

Common side effects

hearing loss or ringing in the ears
dizziness or spinning sensation (vertigo)
kidney problems
numbness, skin tingling or muscle twitching

Cautions

can cause permanent hearing and balance damage (boxed warning)
can damage the kidneys — kidney function is monitored (boxed warning)
muscle weakness and breathing problems can occur after injection
not usually given for more than 14 days

Interactions

other kidney- or ear-toxic medicines (vancomycin, amphotericin B, cisplatin) — avoid
strong water tablets (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) — avoid
muscle relaxants used in anaesthesia (e.g. succinylcholine)

Pregnancy: may harm an unborn baby — use only if clearly needed
