Ambrisentan

A tablet for pulmonary arterial hypertension that improves exercise ability and delays worsening.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • pulmonary arterial hypertension (WHO Group 1)

Common side effects

  • swelling of ankles and legs
  • nasal congestion
  • sinusitis
  • flushing

Cautions

  • must never be used in pregnancy — birth defects (boxed warning)
  • pregnancy test before and during treatment; contraception required
  • not with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • fluid retention and low haemoglobin can occur

Interactions

  • cyclosporine (limit ambrisentan to 5 mg daily)

Pregnancy: never use — causes serious birth defects
