Ambrisentan

A tablet for pulmonary arterial hypertension that improves exercise ability and delays worsening.

Clinical information

Common uses

pulmonary arterial hypertension (WHO Group 1)

Common side effects

swelling of ankles and legs
nasal congestion
sinusitis
flushing

Cautions

must never be used in pregnancy — birth defects (boxed warning)
pregnancy test before and during treatment; contraception required
not with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
fluid retention and low haemoglobin can occur

Interactions

cyclosporine (limit ambrisentan to 5 mg daily)

Pregnancy: never use — causes serious birth defects
