Cautions
- suicide attempts and worsened mental illness reported
- dose must be reduced with kidney problems — overdose deaths reported
- can worsen seizures, heart failure and glaucoma
- blurred vision may signal corneal swelling — get eyes checked
Interactions
- CNS stimulants (careful observation)
- anticholinergic medicines (more side effects)
- thioridazine (worse tremor)
- triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide (higher amantadine levels)
- quinine or quinidine (higher levels)
- live nasal flu vaccine (space doses apart)
Pregnancy: only if benefit justifies risk — fetal harm possible
