Amantadine

Clinical information

Common uses

  • influenza A prevention and treatment
  • Parkinson's disease
  • drug-induced movement disorders (extrapyramidal reactions)

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • dizziness
  • trouble sleeping

Cautions

  • suicide attempts and worsened mental illness reported
  • dose must be reduced with kidney problems — overdose deaths reported
  • can worsen seizures, heart failure and glaucoma
  • blurred vision may signal corneal swelling — get eyes checked

Interactions

  • CNS stimulants (careful observation)
  • anticholinergic medicines (more side effects)
  • thioridazine (worse tremor)
  • triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide (higher amantadine levels)
  • quinine or quinidine (higher levels)
  • live nasal flu vaccine (space doses apart)

Pregnancy: only if benefit justifies risk — fetal harm possible
