Alprazolam

A benzodiazepine tablet for generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder in adults.

Clinical information

Common uses

generalised anxiety disorder (acute treatment)
panic disorder

Common side effects

poor coordination
low blood pressure
slurred speech
increased sex drive

Cautions

with opioids can cause fatal breathing suppression (boxed warning)
risk of misuse, addiction and overdose (boxed warning)
stopping suddenly can cause dangerous withdrawal — taper slowly
avoid driving and alcohol while taking it

Interactions

opioids (profound sedation, breathing suppression)
alcohol and other sedatives (additive effects)
digoxin (toxicity risk)
strong CYP3A inhibitors like ketoconazole (contraindicated)
ritonavir (halve alprazolam dose initially)
CYP3A inducers (reduced effect)

Pregnancy: can sedate the newborn — only if prescribed
