Allopurinol

A daily tablet that lowers uric acid to prevent gout and kidney stones.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing gout attacks
  • uric-acid kidney stones
  • preventing uric-acid build-up during some cancer treatments

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick

Cautions

  • rare serious skin reactions — get any new rash checked urgently
  • extra caution if of Han Chinese, Thai or Korean origin
  • do not stop suddenly — gout may worsen
  • tell your doctor about liver, kidney or thyroid problems

Interactions

  • aspirin and blood thinners like warfarin
  • antibiotics
  • immunosuppressant medicines
  • diuretics like furosemide and ACE inhibitors like ramipril
  • aluminium hydroxide antacids (leave a 3-hour gap)
