Albendazole

An anthelmintic (deworming) tablet for tapeworm larval infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • neurocysticercosis (pork tapeworm larvae)
  • cystic hydatid disease (dog tapeworm larvae)

Common side effects

  • abnormal liver tests
  • stomach pain
  • feeling sick and vomiting
  • headache
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • can suppress bone marrow — regular blood counts
  • may harm an unborn baby — pregnancy test first
  • liver enzymes may rise — regular liver tests
  • neurological symptoms possible when treating neurocysticercosis

Interactions

  • dexamethasone (raises albendazole levels)
  • praziquantel (raises levels)
  • cimetidine (raises levels)
  • theophylline (monitor levels)

Pregnancy: may harm an unborn baby — use contraception
