Adrenaline

Adrenaline (epinephrine) is an emergency injection for severe allergic reactions and for dangerously low blood pressure in septic shock.

Clinical information

Common uses

emergency treatment of anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions
raising blood pressure in septic shock

Common side effects

anxiety and restlessness
tremor and weakness
dizziness and sweating
palpitations and pale skin
nausea, vomiting and headache

Cautions

side effects more likely with heart disease, high blood pressure or overactive thyroid
must not be injected into buttocks, fingers, hands or feet
may worsen angina or cause abnormal heart rhythms
repeat injections at the same site can damage tissue

Interactions

beta blockers such as propranolol
tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors
some antihistamines
thyroid hormones such as levothyroxine
digitalis-type heart medicines
alpha blockers and vasodilators (reduce its effect)

Pregnancy: anaphylaxis treatment is not withheld in pregnancy — used the same way
