Adenosine

An intravenous medicine that restores normal rhythm in certain fast heartbeats (PSVT).

Clinical information

Common uses

converting paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia to normal rhythm

Common side effects

facial flushing
shortness of breath
chest pressure
feeling sick
lightheadedness

Cautions

not for second- or third-degree heart block without pacemaker
not for sick sinus syndrome without pacemaker
brief pauses or rhythm disturbances can follow injection

Interactions

caffeine and theophylline (weaken its effect)
dipyridamole (boosts effect — smaller dose)
carbamazepine (higher degree of heart block)
digoxin or verapamil (rare ventricular fibrillation)
