Aciclovir

An antiviral medicine for infections such as cold sores, shingles, chickenpox and genital herpes.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • cold sores and genital herpes
  • shingles and chickenpox
  • herpes simplex eye infections
  • preventing these infections in weakened immune systems

Common side effects

  • headache
  • feeling dizzy
  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach ache

Cautions

  • drink plenty of water with tablets, especially with kidney problems
  • not if allergic to aciclovir or valaciclovir
  • get advice before using cold sore cream if immunosuppressed

Interactions

  • probenecid (gout medicine)
  • cimetidine (stomach ulcer medicine)
  • mycophenolate mofetil (transplant medicine)

Pregnancy: usually fine — check with a pharmacist or doctor first
