A mucus-thinning medicine for lung conditions, also an antidote to paracetamol overdose.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • thick mucus in chronic lung diseases
  • pulmonary complications of cystic fibrosis
  • paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose antidote

Common side effects

  • mouth soreness
  • feeling sick and vomiting
  • runny nose
  • drowsiness
  • chest tightness

Cautions

  • can trigger wheeze — asthmatics watched carefully
  • loosened mucus may need suctioning if cough is weak

Interactions

  • mixing with other drugs in a nebuliser not established
