Acetyl Salicylic Acid

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a medicine used to reduce the chance of a blood clot or to relieve pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • low daily dose to prevent blood clots, heart attack and stroke
  • pain relief at higher doses
  • preventing pre-eclampsia in pregnancy

Common side effects

  • indigestion and stomach aches
  • bleeding more easily than usual

Cautions

  • do not give to children 15 or under (Reye's syndrome risk)
  • may not suit people with stomach ulcers, asthma or bleeding problems
  • can rarely cause stomach ulcers or bleeding inside the stomach
  • limit alcohol — it increases the risk of side effects

Interactions

  • anticoagulants such as warfarin or rivaroxaban
  • some steroid medicines
  • some antidepressants
  • some blood pressure medicines
  • methotrexate
  • other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen

Pregnancy: low-dose aspirin may be recommended; higher pain-relief doses not recommended
