Abiraterone

Clinical information

Common uses

  • metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (with prednisone)

Common side effects

  • tiredness
  • joint pain
  • high blood pressure
  • feeling sick
  • hot flushes

Cautions

  • raises blood pressure and lowers potassium — monthly monitoring
  • liver damage can be severe — regular liver tests
  • not for severe liver disease
  • men should use contraception — fetal harm possible

Interactions

  • strong CYP3A4 inducers (avoid)
  • narrow-margin CYP2D6 medicines (avoid or reduce dose)
  • pioglitazone or repaglinide (severe low blood sugar risk)

Pregnancy: not for women — can harm an unborn baby
