Abacavir

An antiretroviral tablet taken with other medicines to treat HIV-1 infection.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • HIV-1 infection, in combination with other antiretrovirals

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • headache
  • tiredness and feeling generally unwell
  • vomiting
  • unusual dreams and sleep problems

Cautions

  • serious, sometimes fatal allergic reactions (boxed warning)
  • HLA-B*5701 gene test needed before starting
  • never restart after an allergic reaction
  • not for moderate or severe liver impairment

Interactions

  • methadone (dose may need increasing)
  • riociguat (dose may need reducing)

Pregnancy: registry data show no increased birth-defect risk
