Xiphasia matsubarai is a very unusual blenny, which superficially resembles an eel more than a blenny. This record is based on a specimen that was caught by hand net in Male Harbour in July 1988.

The dorsal fin has 11 spines and 99-104 rays, the anal fin has 2 spines and 97-104 rays, the pectoral fin has 10-11 rays, and the pelvic fin has 1 spine and 3 rays; all of them are extremely long and thin.
