Variola albimarginata is often misidentified as V. louti, but it can be easily distinguished by its narrow white margin on the tail, whereas V. louti has a broad yellow margin on the caudal and other median fins.

This species is found on coral reefs in depths ranging from 4 to 200 meters, where it primarily feeds on fish.

This fish has a dorsal fin with nine spines and fourteen rays, an anal fin with three spines and eight rays, pectoral fins with seventeen to nineteen rays, an oblong body with a depth of two point eight to three point five in standard length, pelvic fins that usually do not reach the anus, mid-lateral body scales that are ctenoid without auxiliary scales, and a caudal fin of adults that is very lunate.
