Variola albimarginata is often misidentified as V. louti, but it can be easily distinguished by its narrow white margin on the tail, whereas V. louti has a broad yellow margin on the caudal and other median fins.

Body brownish-orange or pale red with irregular red bands alternating with yellow lines. Rear margin of caudal fin with narrow white margin. Pectorals yellowish. Other fins same colour as body.
This species is found on coral reefs in depths ranging from 4 to 200 meters, where it primarily feeds on fish.

This fish has a dorsal fin with nine spines and fourteen rays, an anal fin with three spines and eight rays, pectoral fins with seventeen to nineteen rays, an oblong body with a depth of two point eight to three point five in standard length, pelvic fins that usually do not reach the anus, mid-lateral body scales that are ctenoid without auxiliary scales, and a caudal fin of adults that is very lunate.
