R. V. Dr. Fridtjof Nansen caught specimens of Rexea prometheoides near the north of Baa Atoll in 200 m depth by bottom trolling during its visit to Maldives in 1983.

habitat and biology
This species of Gempylid is found near the coasts, inhabiting depths between 135 and 540 meters. It has an oceanic and benthopelagic diet, consisting of a variety of fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has 18 spines, the second dorsal fin has 1 spine, 14-17 rays, and 2 finlets, the anal fin has 2 spines (1 free) 12-15 rays, and 2 finlets, the pectoral fin has 13 rays, and there is a double lateral line with the upper branch ending below the middle of the second dorsal fin base and the lower branch slightly undulating along the posterior part of the body.
