Ecsenius minutus is one of the few fishes known only from the Maldives, and as its scientific name suggests, it is a small species believed to reach a maximum length of approximately 5 cm.

Light brown with diffuse white spots posteriorly and dark blotches anteriorly. Cheek with yellow dots. Dark brown curving line on opercle. Eye with white ring and radiating spokes.
A typical inhabitant of coral reefs, this species feeds on filamentous algae and the small creatures that accompany it.
distinctive characters
The dorsal fin has 12-13 spines and 13-14 rays, the anal fin has 2 spines and 15-16 rays, the pectoral rays are 12-14, and the segmented caudal rays are 13. The snout overhangs the mouth.
