While the Chaetodon vagabundus is by no means rare, it is not especially common in the Maldives. This species of butterflyfish is one of the easiest to keep in an aquarium.

Background colour white, and yellow posteriorly. Broad black band through eye, around posterior part of body and through the caudal fin. Two perpendicular series of thin grey lines on sides.
This creature can be spotted alone, in pairs, or in groups in a variety of environments, but mainly in lush coral reefs. It is not difficult to get close to them, as they feed on coral polyps and algae.

The dorsal fin has 13 spines and 23-26 rays, the anal fin has 3 spines and 19-22 rays, and the pectoral fin has 15-16 rays, with a body depth of 1.5 in standard length.
