The common species Chaetodon melannotus, which has an exquisitely patterned body, is found in the Maldives. Despite its diet of coral polyps, it is well-suited for aquarium life and can be maintained.

Overall white with bright yellow fins. Numerous yellow oblique black lines on sides. Upper back blackish. A black blotch above anal spines. A yellow edged, black bar through eyes.
This species is typically found in coral-rich areas at depths of up to 20 meters. It can be seen alone, in pairs, or in small groups. Its diet consists mainly of coral polyps.
