Trianodon obesus is one of the most common sharks in the Maldives, and is often seen by divers resting on the bottom. It is most active at night and was previously classified under the family Hemigaleidae. Seven individuals were taken by R.V. ‘Farumas’ in North Male’ Atoll.

This species is typically found in clear coastal waters, particularly near coral reefs, at depths of up to 330 m. Its diet consists of a variety of reef fishes, as well as cephalopods and large crustaceans. It is viviparous, with litters of 1 to 5 young (usually 2 or 3).
