Stegastes fasciolatus is common throughout most of its range, but it is not well documented due to its sombre colouration, which it shares with other Indo-West Pacific members of Stegastes and Pomacentrus.

color
Dark brown with black scale outlines. A small black spot on upper pectoral base. Many lavender spots on head and breast. Rear margins of dorsal, caudal and anal fins yellow. In juveniles tips of first few interspinous membranes of dorsal fin bright yellow; caudal peduncle and fin often yellow.

habitat and biology
This species is commonly found in shallow areas with mild to moderate wave action up to a depth of 5 meters. It can also be seen in rocky habitats from the shallow surge pools down to a depth of 30 meters.
distinctive characters
This fish has a dorsal fin with 13 spines and 15-17 rays, an anal fin with 2 spines and 12-14 rays, 19-21 pectoral rays, a body depth of 1.6-2.1 in standard length, serrate margins of preopercle and suborbital, and suborbital scales. Its teeth are uniserial.
