habitat and biology
This species is rarely seen in shallow waters, but small juveniles can be found in the deeper offshore areas, swimming beneath floating plants and debris. They feed mainly on fish and are typically found between 30 and 160 meters below the surface.

The first dorsal fin has seven spines, the second dorsal fin has one spine and twenty-seven to thirty-three rays, and the anal fin has two detached spines followed by one spine and eighteen to twenty-two rays. The gill rakers (excluding rudiments) on the first arch are twenty-two to twenty-six. The body is elongated, moderately deep, and slightly compressed, with a broad upper jaw extending to below the posterior mid-point of the pupil. There are no scutes on the lateral line, and grooves are present on the caudal peduncle.
