This species has a dorsal fin with 11 spines and 13-15 (usually 14) rays, an anal fin with 4 spines and 9 rays, a pectoral fin with 13-15 rays, a body depth of 2.4-2.9 in standard length, 5 oblique rows of scales on the cheek, 40-43 lateral line scales, a slightly convex dorsal profile of the head, a long preopercular spine, and membranes between the dorsal spines that are strongly incised.
