The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is the largest living fish and is not a dangerous species. It is sometimes seen by divers during the southwest monsoon off the east coast and during the northeast monsoon off the west coast, although no specimens have been collected or are likely to be collected. Fisheries staff have occasionally seen this species, which is rare and endangered and is therefore a protected species in the Maldives.

habitat and biology
This filter feeder is usually found alone or in small groups, often close to the top of the water. It mainly eats plankton, but can also consume small pelagic crustaceans or small fish that swim in schools.

The whale shark, with its huge size and distinctive spotting, cannot be confused with any other species due to its very wide, nearly terminal mouth with numerous minute teeth and its very broad head.
